Fusion of teeth: A presentation of four cases
Osaghae IP
Objective: Congenital epulis of the newborn is a rare benign soft-tissue tumour of the gingival, which is also called gingival granular cell tumour of the newborn. This slow growing soft tissue tumour affect commonly the labial side of the gingivae of a new born child. It is essential to document the presentation and the management of this lesion because of its rare nature. The objective of this study was to highlight the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of the lesion..
Methods: Three clinical cases of congenital epulis were used to illustrate the presentation and surgical management of the lesion..
Results: The first clinical case was a one month old female child with a protruding gum tumour on the anterior alveolar process of the maxillae. The second case was a one week old male child with a gingival growth on the anterior alveolar process of the maxillae. The third case was new born male child with the tumour at the anterior alveolar process of the maxillae. All the tumours were surgically excised under local anesthesia.
Conclusion: Congenital epulis of the newborn could interfere with the functions of the oral cavity. Therefore, it is imperative to surgically excise it when diagnosed. Sequel to the management of the three cases presented, it is necessary to always examine the oral cavity of the new born to rule out the presence of epulis and any other oral lesion.

Retrospective Analysis of Reasons for Conventional Root Canal Treatment of Permanent Teeth in a Nigerian Tertiary Hospital
Ibhawoh LO, Enabulele JE
Objective: To analyse the reasons for conventional root canal treatment of permanent teeth in a Nigerian tertiary hospital.
Methods: This was a retrospective study of patients who received root canal treatment in the Restorative Dentistry Clinic of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital between January, 2017 and June, 2018. Data of interest garnered were age, gender, tooth root-treated, presenting complaint, primary aetiology and the diagnosis. All data were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS version 21.0.
Results: A total of 292 records of 309 rooted-treated teeth were used for the study. A higher proportion of the patients were females. The molars were the most frequently roottreated teeth (47.6%). The most prevalent pathology associated with root canal treatment was a sequela of dental caries (74.4%). Pain was the most common symptom (89.6%) and the most prevalent diagnosis made was acute apical periodontitis (48.2%). A higher proportion of teeth that had sequelae of dental caries and failed root canal treatment were posterior teeth while those predominantly traumatised were anterior teeth (p<0.0001). Pain was reported more in posterior teeth. Irreversible pulpitis, acute apical periodontitis and failed root canal treatment were reported more in posterior teeth while complicated crown fracture and dentoalveolar abscess were more in anterior teeth. A higher proportion of teeth that were traumatised and had failed root canal treatment were maxillary teeth (p<0.0001).
Conclusion: Sequelae of dental caries were the most prevalent pathologies associated with root canal treatment. The molars and the maxillary arch were the most frequently involved, with pain being the most common presenting
Discrimination towards People with Halitosis in Nigeria
Azodo CC,Ogbebor GO
Objective: To assess the levels of discrimination towards people with halitosis among Nigerian undergraduates.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduates in Benin City, Nigeria as part of a larger scale halitosis relational survey. Information was obtained on individual characteristics and level of discriminatory attitudes. The information was measured on a halitosis discriminatory scale (HDS). The HDS had 18 items on usual everyday interactions and specific domains such as employment, education, housing and interactions such as with law enforcement and service providers.
Results: Of the participants, 38.7% reported moderate/major discrimination towards halitosis sufferers. This discrimination was not significantly associated age and sex. The mean score for threat/harassment was 3.04±0.06 and that of insult was 3.11±0.07 under everyday interactions. Regarding domains, employment was the most discriminatory domain (recruitment for a new job > being dismissed from a job > promotion denial) and the least discriminatory domain was housing.
Conclusion: Discrimination exists towards people with halitosis in Nigeria, especially regarding everyday interactions and employment. A community based success oriented halitosis preventive and curative approach will help offset this inequality tag.
